Required fields
Required fields are the parts of a form that must be completed before it can be submitted
What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.
What it is and how it works
They are often marked with an asterisk, but it is good practice to explain what it means at the start of the form or to write “required” next to the label, since the symbol alone is not always understood or announced by screen readers. In HTML they are declared with the required attribute, which supports validation and communicates the state to assistive technologies.
From a user experience perspective, each required field adds friction, so it is best to ask only for what is necessary. Data protection law also requires personal data to be adequate and limited to its purpose, which is another reason not to make optional information mandatory.
