Darknet

A darknet is an overlay network on top of the internet that can only be accessed with specific software or settings, such as Tor, and is designed to hide users’ identities and the location of services

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

Tor is the best known: it routes traffic through several encrypted nodes and allows sites with .onion addresses. The content accessible on these networks is called the dark web.

It is known for illicit markets in drugs, weapons and stolen data, but it is also used by journalists, activists and people living under censorship to communicate safely, and some news outlets offer .onion versions of their sites. It should not be confused with the deep web, which covers everything search engines do not index, such as email, online banking or intranets. Whether using these tools is legal depends on the country and the purpose.
