Disk space

Disk space is the storage capacity a web hosting service allocates to a site for its files, databases and sometimes email

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

It holds the code, images, videos, downloadable documents, backups and logs. Each hosting plan sets a limit, and exceeding it can stop uploads, incoming email or site updates.

It is now usually SSD or NVMe storage, faster than traditional hard drives. Besides capacity, other limits matter, such as bandwidth, number of files (inodes) and CPU and memory resources. Optimising images, deleting old backups and serving videos from external platforms or a CDN help keep it under control.
