What is a dot-com company?

A company that performs most of its activities online. Although it can be used to describe current pure play and click and mortar companies, the term generally refers pejoratively to a business model that proliferated towards the end of the 90s, as an example of electronic commerce that is deficiently integrated with the Internet. Whereby a first generation of startups was created for the sole purpose of exploiting vacant market segments at the time and benefiting from entrepreneurial financial assistance. Obtained quick profits until the dot-com bubble burst bankrupting multiple investors.
