What is a pure play?

Business model that works exclusively through the Internet. Regardless of physical headquarters, these virtual businesses lower establishment costs and can exploit specialization by addressing segmented audiences that are impossible to cover in fixed locations. Some companies that emerged as pure players, have subsequently opened physical facilities, such as Amazon.

Previously called Dot Coms, this term fell into disuse by associating with negative connotations after the dotcom bubble.
