Footer

A footer is the bottom area of a web page, or of a section within it, where general secondary information is grouped together

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

It typically holds contact details, legal links (legal notice, privacy policy, cookies), social media links, a short sitemap or a newsletter sign-up form. Because it repeats across the whole site, it acts as a fallback for orientation when someone reaches the end of the content without finding what they need.

In HTML it is marked up with the footer element, which assistive technologies can recognise as the site’s information region. It should not be confused with the footer of an individual article, which may show the author or date, and it works best when links are prioritised and grouped rather than piled up.
