Hyperlink

A hyperlink is an element in a digital document that, when activated, takes the user to another document, another resource or another part of the same document

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

It is the foundation of the World Wide Web, allowing people to move between pages without following a linear order. It can be text, an image or a button, and in HTML it is created with the a element and its href attribute, which holds the destination URL. Hyperlinks also appear in emails, PDFs and office documents.

For usability and accessibility, link text should describe where it leads, rather than phrases like “click here”, and links should be visually distinct from body text. In SEO, links help search engines discover pages and understand how they relate, and their anchor text provides context.
