Keyword prominence

Keyword prominence is how prominently a keyword is placed in a page’s elements, such as the title, headings, URL or the beginning of the text

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

It is a classic on-page SEO concept: a keyword was thought to carry more weight the earlier it appeared in the title tag, the H1 or the opening paragraphs. It still makes sense as a clarity principle, because a title that states the topic early helps both people and search engines understand what the page is about.

However, today’s search engines interpret meaning and search intent beyond the literal position of words, so forcing the keyword to the start of every element adds little and can harm readability. It is related to keyword proximity, which measures the distance between terms.
