Microblog

A microblog is a service or format for publishing short messages, displayed chronologically or algorithmically, that others can follow and reply to

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

It combines the logic of a blog, with your own posts and an archive, with the immediacy of messaging: short texts, links, images or videos updated frequently. Twitter, now X, popularised the format; Tumblr combined it with multimedia content, and more recently alternatives such as Mastodon, Bluesky and Threads have appeared.

It is used to follow the news, hold real-time conversations, handle customer service or cover events. Brevity forces the message to be prioritised, but it also encourages oversimplification and the rapid spread of unverified information.
