What it is and how it works

Large general-interest portals such as Yahoo or Terra peaked in the late 1990s and early 2000s, offering news, search, email, chat and directories in the hope of becoming the browser’s home page. As dominant search engines and social networks arrived, that model lost ground.

Today the term is mostly used for sites that centralise information or services in one area: a jobs portal, a government transparency portal or a company’s employee portal. When it focuses on a single sector it is called a vertical portal.
