Smishing

Smishing is a form of phishing that uses text messages, SMS or messaging apps, to trick victims into handing over their data or money

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

The message usually impersonates a bank, a courier, a government body or a well-known service and creates urgency: a held parcel, a suspicious charge or an unpaid fine. It contains a link to a fake site that imitates the real one, or asks the recipient to reply with details or call a number.

The name combines “SMS” and “phishing”. It differs from vishing, which uses voice calls. To stay safe, avoid opening links in unexpected messages, reach services by typing their address directly or through their official app, and check any warning through a channel you trust.
