What it is and how it works
Content arrives in small chunks that are buffered and played almost immediately. It can be on demand, such as Netflix series or Spotify music, or live, such as a sports broadcast, a concert or a stream on Twitch or YouTube. Quality often adapts to the connection speed.
It differs from downloading in that the file is not stored permanently on the device, unless the service offers that option. The rise of streaming has transformed how people consume television, music and games, and has given rise to OTT services delivered over the internet outside traditional operators.
