Time on page

Time on page is an estimate of duration defined by an analytics tool. Its calculation depends on the events and conditions that the tool can observe

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

Historical metrics based on differences between interactions are not equivalent to engagement time in systems such as GA4. A page in the foreground does not demonstrate reading or understanding either. Interpretation requires knowing the method and combining duration with the task and outcomes, without treating more time as a better experience in every case.
