Web 2.0

Web 2.0 is the label popularised in the mid-2000s to describe a participatory web in which users create, share and comment on content rather than simply consulting it

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

The term spread from 2004 onwards thanks to Tim O’Reilly and Dale Dougherty. In contrast to the static sites of the earlier period, Web 2.0 was associated with blogs, wikis, social networks, content syndication, collaborative tagging and web applications running in the browser.

It was a shift in model and discourse rather than a specific technology. Today it is used mainly as a historical reference: many of its practices are now standard, and the expression “Web3” refers to different, blockchain-related ideas that are not its direct continuation.
