What is a botnet?

Set of computers which, unbeknown to their users, have been hacked and in turn have infected other computers, forming a large network enabling their maker to manage them from a single point and program them to perform a single activity for fraudulent purposes.

Initially developed for indiscriminate spam mailing or redirecting traffic to overload servers, their use has been extended to include the practice of click fraud, generating unnatural clicks from an infinite number of real IPs, acting in a manner that simulates spontaneity.
