Think tank

A think tank is an organisation that researches and produces analysis and proposals on public policy, economics, society or technology with the aim of influencing debate and decision-making

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

In Spanish, expressions such as “laboratorio de ideas” or “centro de pensamiento” are used, while the literal “tanque de ideas” is an awkward calque. Think tanks may be independent or linked to political parties, companies, universities or foundations, and their credibility depends largely on transparency about their funding and methods.

In business the term is sometimes used more loosely for a group of experts brought together to generate ideas or reflect on a strategic issue. That usage is closer to an advisory panel or innovation workshop than to a think tank in the strict sense.
