Margins

Margins, in a layout grid, are the spaces between the content and the left and right edges of the screen or container

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

They are usually set as fixed values for each breakpoint range and increase on larger screens, where a generous margin gives content room to breathe and keeps it away from the edges. On mobile, margins of 16 dp or 16 px are common.

They should not be confused with gutters, which separate columns, or with padding, which is the space inside an element. In CSS, the margin property refers to the outer space of any element, a broader sense than in a grid.
