What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

Examples include a newspaper promoting subscriptions in its pages, a website using its banner slots to highlight its own offer, or an app promoting another feature. Ad slots that are not sold to third parties are also often filled with these in-house ads.

It brings no direct revenue from selling space, but it uses available inventory for the owner’s goals, such as gaining subscribers or raising awareness of sections. It is related to owned media but is more specific: using advertising formats within one’s own channel.
