What it is and how it works
It covers websites, apps, digital products, social media assets, banners, presentations, motion graphics and device interfaces. Alongside the visual fundamentals of graphic design, such as layout, typography and colour, it considers interaction, adaptation to different screen sizes, accessibility and how elements behave in motion.
It is a broad term. Web design and interface design are specialisms within it, while user experience design deals with more than visuals: how a person achieves their goal across a whole process.
