Human-computer interaction
Human-computer interaction is the discipline that studies how people use computer systems and how to design them so that the relationship is effective, safe and satisfying
What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.
What it is and how it works
Known as HCI, it draws on computer science, cognitive psychology, ergonomics, design and the social sciences. It studies perception, memory and human error, develops evaluation methods and has produced principles and laws widely used in interface design, such as Fitts's law.
It is the academic field that underpins usability, interaction design and user experience. Today it also covers voice interfaces, augmented reality, wearables and interaction with artificial intelligence systems, not just the desktop computer.
