Pay per sale (PPS)

Pay per sale is a remuneration model in which the advertiser pays a commission only when the promotion generates a sale

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

It is one of the most widely used models in affiliate marketing: the publisher or affiliate receives a percentage of the order value or a fixed amount for each order attributed to their link. Attribution relies on cookies with an agreed time window, URL parameters or server-to-server integrations, which depend less on the browser.

It shifts the risk to the affiliate, who is paid only if a purchase takes place, so terms are usually agreed on returns, cancellations and which attribution model applies when several affiliates are involved. It differs from pay per lead, which pays for contacts, and from cost per acquisition, which may refer to any action defined as a conversion.
