Product sampling

Sampling is the free distribution of product samples, or service trials, so that people can get to know and try it before buying

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

It is a classic technique for launches in fast-moving consumer goods, cosmetics, food or pharmacy, carried out at points of sale, events, home deliveries, magazines or alongside other purchases. Its equivalent for digital products is demos, previews and free trials.

Besides lowering the barrier to first trial, it allows feedback and data on audience reactions to be gathered. It works best when samples reach people with genuine interest and come with an easy way to buy afterwards. In analytics and research, sampling means something else: working with a subset of the data or population.
