Social media press release
The social media press release was a press release format designed for the social web, with multimedia content, links and elements that were easy to share and reuse
What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.
What it is and how it works
It emerged around 2006 as an alternative to the traditional release, at the height of Web 2.0 and blogging. It proposed structuring information in blocks (key facts, quotes, images, videos, links, tags, an RSS feed and sharing options) so that journalists, bloggers and the public could take what they needed and spread it.
As a named format it has fallen out of use, and the entry is kept as a historical reference. Many of its ideas have been absorbed into online newsrooms and today’s press releases, which usually include downloadable multimedia assets, links and versions adapted for social networks.
