Stop motion
Stop motion is an animation technique that creates the illusion of movement by photographing real objects frame by frame, moving them slightly between shots
What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.
What it is and how it works
When the photographs are played in sequence, usually at 12 to 24 per second, the objects appear to move by themselves. It is used with jointed puppets, modelling clay (claymation), paper cut-outs, everyday objects or people (pixilation), and the camera usually stays fixed while whatever is in front of it moves.
In advertising and on social media it is valued for its handmade, recognisable look, useful for presenting products in an original way or explaining processes. It requires careful planning with a storyboard, because every second involves many photographs, and it differs from computer animation and traditional cartoons in that it works with physical objects.
