What are vanity metrics?

Metrics which are not relevant to the development of a digital product or service, and which do not supply useful information for taking business decisions. The number of visits to a website, the number of Twitter followers, the number of Facebook fans, can be interpreted as being vanity indicators. They are easy to measure or monitor, but their usefulness is limited and they can give a false impression of growth. They are distinguished from actionable metrics.
