What is a captcha?

Security system that helps determine if a user wishing to access an application is human or robotic. At some point during a downloaded process, form completion, comment or purchase, a simple test is used by way of a filter, generally consisting of a graphic with a series of slightly distorted characters, that the user must interpret and enter into a text box. If the user is a robot, it will be unable to resolve the problem and will not be granted access to the next stage in the process.

Acronym or abbreviation:
Captcha: Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart
