Hick-Hyman law

The Hick-Hyman law relates choice time to the number and uncertainty of the available alternatives

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

In design it helps to think about how decisions are presented. It does not mean that any interface improves by removing options: familiarity, organisation and the task also play a part. Grouping alternatives and clarifying their differences can reduce effort without impoverishing the offer.
