Site tree
A site tree is a hierarchical representation of a website’s sections and pages, showing how content is organised and how its levels relate to one another
What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.
What it is and how it works
It is produced during the information architecture phase, before visual design, to decide which sections exist, what each contains and the paths people will take to reach each page. It acts as a shared reference for design, content and development.
It should not be confused with an XML sitemap, a technical file listing URLs for search engines, or with a user flow, which describes the steps of a specific task. The proposed structure can be validated with techniques such as card sorting or tree testing, which check whether people find content where they expect it.
