User flow

A user flow represents the actions and decisions needed to complete a task within a product or service

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

It shows steps, alternatives and possible errors in order to review the logic of an experience. It differs from the customer journey, which covers a broader relationship and may span several channels. The flow should be checked against people's needs and behaviour.

Variants and linked concepts

  • Forward navigation. Forward navigation allows a person to move ahead in a task. It should keep the next step and its consequences clear.
  • Backward navigation. Backward navigation allows earlier steps to be reviewed without unexpectedly losing information.
  • Lateral navigation. Lateral navigation allows movement between related sections. It should help people stay oriented.
