Affordance

An affordance is a possibility for action that arises from the relationship between a person and an object or environment

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

In design it is useful to distinguish it from the signals that help people discover that action. A control may allow pressing, but it needs understandable cues for the person to recognise it. Perception depends on experience, abilities and context.
