What is the semantic web?

Extension of the current web so that it can be interpreted by machines and not just humans, by employing metadata. The metadata is responsible for describing the content, its meaning and the relationships that exist between the data, so that processing machines can automatically assess it.

Thereby making web searches more intelligent and requiring less intervention on the part of the user for selecting information, as the search engine can understand the web pages, rather than merely putting them on a list.
