Fixed grid

A fixed grid is a layout grid with fixed-width columns in which the side margins grow or shrink to absorb any extra space

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

Within each range of screen sizes, the content always keeps the same width and stays centred; its layout only changes at a breakpoint, where it may switch to another column configuration. It is useful for controlling line length and composition on large screens.

It contrasts with a fluid grid, whose columns stretch or shrink with the screen. Many sites combine the two: a fluid grid on mobile and a fixed maximum width on desktop.
