Fluid grid

A fluid grid is a layout grid whose columns widen or narrow in proportion to the screen size, so that content fills the available space

What it means, how it is used and where it comes up, with its related concepts.

What it is and how it works

Widths are defined as percentages or fractions rather than fixed values, and breakpoints are used to change the number of columns or rearrange elements when space requires it. It is one of the foundations of responsive design, together with flexible images and media queries.

It contrasts with a fixed grid. To avoid overly long lines of text on very wide screens, it is often combined with a maximum container width.
