What it is and how it works
Three functions should be distinguished: robots.txt controls crawling, noindex requests the exclusion of content from the index, and canonical indicates a preferred version among duplicates. They are not interchangeable tools. Unlike historical PageRank sculpting practices, the current approach is to organise links around readers' needs and keep site signals consistent, without promising a precise distribution of authority.
