Defying ageing
We all come into the world with the single certainty that at some point we will die. However, the inevitability of death may stop being a certainty… Silicon Valley’s leading millionaires have launched or funded biotech projects to try to slow down age-related diseases and improve quality of life.
Although it still sounds like something out of a film, the quest for immortality, or for longer life, is a challenge that may be closer to being achieved.
The relentless ageing of the world’s population, added this past year to the lives lost to the pandemic, has boosted the desire to be immortal.
That is why recent months have seen a boom in start-ups that, under the name of death tech, offer new ways to face the last stages of life, manage one’s personal legacy or choose what to do with one’s remains before dying.
At the same time, companies that use individual tests to reveal our biological age or genetic origin are becoming popular. And IoT tools are emerging with new features to read our emotional state through voice recognition and image analysis. But while we wait for the promise of immortality, we ask ourselves: how far can technology stretch our lifespan? Will it be within everyone’s reach?
