Seeking fluid online communication
The virtual alternatives to in-person meetings that took off unstoppably in the first months of the COVID-19 lockdown will remain a very valid option throughout 2021 and the years ahead.
Many video conferencing apps and digital solutions for remote offices have proven to be high-performing and fit for everyday use.
Now that the peak months driven by social distancing are behind us, the providers of these services are working to optimise and refine these tools to make time spent in meetings more practical and human.
Over recent months, terms such as “zoom fatigue” have emerged, which even Zoom’s founder, Eric Yuan, hinted at suffering after attending 19 conferences in a single day. And so-called “zoombombing”, with unwanted participants trolling or disrupting online sessions, shows that there is still work to be done on security and privacy.
Even so, we are already witnessing the optimisation and evolution of online meetings through artificial intelligence, virtual reality and gamification techniques that seek to make these encounters as close to reality as possible, recovering gestures and bringing back the physical component of traditional meetings. Video calls are clearly here to stay.
