Lawless Territory

As in any territory associated with real life, immersion in the metaverse can generate threats. In the event of any confusion or infringement, it will be essential to protect both users and brands and intermediaries who may see their presence in these worlds endangered. However, in the same way, all the actors involved in the metaverse must have a series of responsibilities and rules of conduct that guarantee stability and a correct virtual coexistence.

The generation of avatars and identities requires special supervision for the protection of data and infringement of rights and is one of the great challenges of the metaverse, which will have to establish ethical codes and its own "metajurisdiction" for the regulation of its spaces and users.

In addition, growing environmental concerns have generated debate around the impact of the metaverse on sustainability and its compatibility with the SDGs. While it is clear that the volume of data will increase significantly, it is expected that the opportunities for interaction offered by these spaces will offset much of the emissions in other areas of our lives (tourism, travel, concerts, consumption...).

We are facing a context that, if it is not free of laws, is covered by the digital rules that apply to the Internet, it needs a strict regulation that contemplates all the criminal situations that occur in the real world.

  1. 01

Although trademark and intellectual property laws apply in the digital world, avatarization requires adapted protection. Different voices demand responsibility and common sense in a field that, for now, is free of jurisdiction.

  2. 02

It is still too early to tell how far the metaverse will go and what impact it will have. However, when it comes to sustainability, the technology sector will have to focus on applications that reduce environmental impact to be in line with the SDGs.

  3. 03

Particular attention is paid to the regulation of the economic system. The speed of transactions and the cross-border nature of these new environments may favour the emergence of new cybercriminals and money laundering activities.
