Mental health under threat
The psychological consequences of the coronavirus pandemic have not yet fully emerged, but some experts have predicted a tsunami of new disorders or a pressing growth in existing ones.
Many of the effects on mental health are yet to be seen, but living through a pandemic is nothing like surviving a natural disaster.
It is less visible and less predictable. It is a creeping threat rather than houses flying and cities reduced to rubble: psychologically, a marathon rather than a sprint to safety.
What is clear is that general levels of anxiety and depression are rising. Economic devastation doesn't help, and the WHO warns: “Social isolation, fear of contagion and the loss of family members are compounded by the distress caused by loss of income and, often, employment”.
“Many people are afraid of going back to life before the coronavirus”. Adriana Sanclemente, coordinator of the Mental Health Federation.
