When second chances work

The term alargascencia, which combines the verb ‘alargar’ (to extend) with the ending of ‘obsolescencia’ (obsolescence), is a neologism coined by the environmental association Amigos de la Tierra (Friends of the Earth) and names the initiative that fights to extend the useful life of products in order to reduce the consumption of natural resources.

Although today's consumption trend is to throw away and immediately replace a damaged product, the economic crisis resulting from COVID-19 will reduce people's spending power, which is why many citizens could join this movement calling for owning less and making objects last longer.

It is currently estimated that the average time a person uses a smartphone is two to three years. Surprisingly, according to EU research, the average life of desktop printers is just five hours and four minutes of actual printing time.
