Imperfectly human
The ideal of perfection, aspirational for years, is starting to lose value in an environment saturated with polished, predictable content. The widespread use of systems that can generate flawless images, texts and stories in seconds has changed the rules of the game: when everything can be correct, perfection stops being a differentiator.
Imperfection is beginning to emerge as a sign of authenticity and a strategic response to homogenisation. Error, the unfinished, the spontaneous and even the uncomfortable are starting to work as marks of origin and as evidence of a human intention behind them, a process and an experience that cannot be replicated in the short term.
As content generated by LLMs (Large Language Models) becomes more sophisticated, so do the forms of differentiation. Designers and creative professionals are shifting the focus from outcome to process, making visible what used to be hidden: testing, iteration, mistakes. At the same time, language is starting to adopt less normative codes in which correctness matters less than closeness and a voice of one’s own.
This shift is not merely an aesthetic matter; it involves a deeper transformation in how value is perceived. What doesn’t quite fit and resists standardisation is precisely what makes uniqueness recognisable.
However, this logic is not static. If imperfection becomes a code, it will also be learned, replicated and, most likely, neutralised. Even in the pursuit of imperfection, authenticity will remain contested ground.
Cases
01 / 11From feed to chaos
Until now, the dominant aesthetic on social media has been defined by an ideal of clean, chromatically coherent, minimalist visuals. A loosely defined but recognisable aesthetic that worked as a common language of digital success. However, that canon, now easily replicable, is starting to lose strength as its capacity to generate credibility fades.
In its place, a messier and deliberately imperfect aesthetic current is emerging. This could be called a messy logic, in which everyday chaos and lack of staging become codes of authenticity. Lived-in spaces, unprepared settings and everyday scenes replace the Cartesian order that for years defined what was aspirational.
This shift is no coincidence. The movement responds to growing fatigue with the saturation of highly produced content and the spread of AI-generated posts. At a time when the perfect image is increasingly suspected of being artificial, polish loses its value as a guarantee of truth. Aesthetics stops being a desirable filter and, in many cases, becomes a sign of doubt.
In response, the unpolished voice, the improvised image and unprepared exposure are starting to be read as signs of closeness. Even formal imperfection, from the way people speak to the way they show themselves, creates a stronger connection.
Aesthetic credibility no longer lies in the flawless; it seeks the recognisable in the human, and the human in the messy.
Zorraquino spotlights
- 01
Perfection is losing value as a marker of credibility. In an environment saturated with AI-generated and AI-assisted content, flawlessness is no longer a sign of quality and becomes suspected of artificiality.
- 02
Imperfection is establishing itself as a mark of human authenticity. Error, the unfinished and the everyday work as visible proof of human authorship against algorithmic standardisation.
- 03
The process gains weight over the final result. Testing, iteration, error and everything left unedited are revalued as differentiators in design, content and communication.
- 04
Aesthetics shift from order to meaningful disorder. Spotless visual logic loses ground to more chaotic, spontaneous and uncurated compositions that heighten the sense of reality.
- 05
Credibility is built from the everyday and the unproduced. Informal, spontaneous and barely prepared content creates more connection and trust than overproduced languages.
- 06
Brands are adjusting their expression to look more recognisable than perfect. They adopt more direct, closer and less polished codes, seeking to build familiarity and trust.
