Adapting to the user's mood

Interpreting emotions

Although it may sound like science fiction or an episode of Black Mirror, the possibility of a device adjusting to, and even anticipating, each user according to their changes of mood is real and could change the way we see technology. The concept of “Mood as interface” (MAI) is the last frontier in designing personalised user interfaces. Through biometric technology, facial identification and the development of neural networks, it is possible to offer a personalised experience based on each user's mood and emotions.

It is one more stage in UX: from appealing to the senses, we move on to studying thoughts and getting inside people's brains.

At the same time, it raises doubts about technology's ability to read emotions correctly and about how much power we want to give machines, and whether we want to let them know how we feel.

In any case, it offers great possibilities for personalisation in e-commerce, products, colours… according to mood.
