What is an interstitial?

Full-screen advertising message that is displayed in the active window whilst new page content is loaded. As with a TV advert, an interstitial demands passivity on the part of the user, who, in many instances cannot avoid its sudden appearance or interrupt its display; and can therefore be considered to be an intrusion into the natural browsing process.
