What is direct traffic?

Visitors who arrive at a website directly, i.e. they write the website URL in the browser’s address bar, or they have the website bookmarked in their browser and click on it. In practice, Google Analytics also considers visitors from other sources, such as those who follow a link in a messaging app or within a PDF document, as direct traffic.
