What is Menéame?

Website that works as a news aggregator where registered users share links that they consider to be interesting with the aim that they will reach the home page through the votes of other internet users. When a user sends in some news, this joins the queue of pending items until it gets sufficient votes to be promoted to the home page. Each user has a so-called karma, a score from 0 to 20 based on their past activity on the website and which makes their vote more or less valuable. This social network of Spanish origin, based on open-source code, is the most popular Spanish-language news aggregator and one of those generating the largest amount of traffic at a global level. This website has given rise to the Menéame effect, or momentary increases in visits.
