What is a sitemap?

Schematic and hierarchical representation of all pages for a website and the links that connect them. It is a document in standard XML format that is included as a section within the actual site, and which can be used

  1. to plan the website design,
  2. as a guide to facilitate visitor browsing, or
  3. to indicate which pages search engine web crawlers can index. With knowledge of all internal site links, search engines can track dynamic web pages that are only available on specific occasions and which would otherwise go undetected. What's more, each page listed can include additional information, such as update frequency or importance within the site. Google, for example, uses the free Google Sitemaps application for this purpose.
