What is web 2.0?

Web 2.0 is above all a philosophy, a new way of understanding the Internet, represented by a second generation of websites which, unlike what went before, facilitate open communication. In contrast with the static nature of sites designed using HTML, the modification of which depended on periodic updates by a webmaster, the Web 2.0 model is dynamic and aimed at encouraging interaction. Thanks to the incorporation of modern applications such as content management systems (CMS) or syndication, instead of being merely passive recipients of information, users have acquired the ability to participate in the creation and editing of the content they consume. Web 2.0 thereby increases individuals capability for influence via platforms for free expression such as forums, blogs, wikis, social networks etc.
