What is referral traffic?

Visitors to a website arriving via an external link located in another web page that leads to the website. For example, referral traffic would be visits to a website by users who have clicked on a banner that is linked to the website, or on a link appearing in a blog. This metric is important because the number of links that a website receives – and also their quality – is one of the most important variables in determining the authority of the domain.
