What is an operating system?

Program or collection of programs that constitutes the basis of all communication between users and a computer or mobile phone. It is responsible for administering the physical elements of the device (hardware) and allows applications to be run (word processors, browsers...). It is one of the most critical parts of the device, and computers or mobile phones need it to function correctly in order to work properly. It becomes operational as soon as the device is turned on, and allows all other operations to be performed normally. The most common operating systems for computers are Microsoft Windows, Linux/UNIX, and Apple Mac OS, whereas for mobile phones the most widely used are Android, iOS, and Windows Phone.
