What is astroturfing?

Unethical buzz marketing practice consisting of the orchestrated generation of commercial content on social media, designed to look spontaneous. Users are exposed to messages unaware of the interests behind them, and the person responsible thereby manages to associate certain positive concepts with their brand, improving their online reputation. This type of ruse is executed by a few users who coordinate with each other strategically to give the impression of a crowd, and thereby generate a certain artificial buzz.

Used regularly in comments fields, forums, chat rooms and even on blogs specifically designed for the purpose, known as Flogs.
